Determining Whether Or Not It's Time To Replace Or Repair Your Air Conditioner

Posted on

If something is wrong with your air conditioning, it can be difficult to determine whether or not the repair costs are going to be worth it in the end or if it would just be better to replace it altogether. Here's a good way to determine whether to not it's time to replace or repair your air conditioner:

  1. Replace if Older Than 10 Years: If you have an air conditioner that is older than ten years and is in need of repairs, it's time to replace it with an air conditioner that is energy efficient. Most air conditioners that are older than 10 years are not as energy efficient as they should be. Newer models can save you hundreds on cooling costs, which will outweigh the cost of installing a new one instead of repairing the old one that you have.
  2. Replace if Uses R-22 Refrigerant: If you air conditioner uses R-22 refrigerant, it should be replaced one problems arise, especially if there is a leak in the compressor. Once this happens, an air conditioner that uses R-22 refrigerant will need a new compressor at some point. This can cost as much as a new air conditioner. There is a new refrigerant, called R-410A that will replace the R-22 refrigerant in new units, which will cause less problems, be more cost efficient, and more environmentally friendly, as well.
  3. Replace if Repairs are Needed too Often: An air conditioning system that is in need of repairs too often, typically every summer that you begin using it, it should be replaced. This is because it indicates that the system is not as energy efficient as it should be and is costing you too much in both repairs and utility costs.
  4. Replace if You Plan on Moving: Finally, if you plan on moving within the next few years, you should consider replacing the air conditioning unit if problems start to arise. Not only will this up your home's value, but it can save you money on utility costs in the last few years that you will be living in the home. This can help prepare you financially for the move and ensure that you are not wasting your time on repair after repair for an air conditioner that is older and causing problems.

When you know what to consider when it comes to repairing or replacing your air conditioning system, you can be sure that you make the best decision financially in the end.
