When Your Air Conditioner Is Short Cycling: Problem Solving With Your Air Conditioning Contractor

Posted on

Your air conditioner can begin turning on and off quickly without taking care of the heat within your home. There are a number of reasons your air conditioner may be short cycling, and it's important to have the problem checked out by your air conditioning contractor when this happens. A common problem with your air conditioner turning on and off quickly without moderating the temperature is when your unit is the wrong size for your home. An air conditioner that is too large for your home can cool your home fast, but will shut down quickly and not complete the cycle. Too small, and your air conditioner is going to end up overheating from trying to cool your home.

Check Your Air Filters First

The air filter should be changed monthly for your air conditioner to work properly. If your filter is full, the air flow to your unit is going to be blocked, Your air conditioner will strain to cool off your home and will shut off prematurely so that it doesn't overheat. If changing the air filter doesn't stop the problem, it may be time to contact your air conditioning contractor.

Your Unit is the Wrong Size

An air conditioner that is too big for your home will blast your house with cold air and then shut off before a cycle is over. Bigger does not benefit your home and air conditioning system. You will have a hard time regulating the temperature in your home when the unit is too large. A unit that is too small is going to continually strain in order to cool your home.

The Air Conditioner Needs Refrigerant

If your refrigerant levels are low, your air conditioner can't cool off your home effectively. Your unit will short cycle when it needs refrigerant, as it is going to be straining in order to cool your space. You may notice that your evaporator coils are starting to freeze up if you need refrigerant. You can find ice on your evaporator coils building up because of low refrigerant or problems with your blower.

Pay attention to your air conditioner when it is turning on and off rapidly without cooling off your home. You can try changing your air filter to see if that helps. If there is ice on your evaporator coils, let it melt and see if the short cycling stops. If the problem persists, contact your air conditioning company to handle the problem.
